AbstractPublished by Western Psychological Services, the "Social Responsiveness Scale" (SRS; Constantino & Gruber, 2005) was designed to assess abilities and deficits in social reciprocity. In particular, it was designed to assess subthreshold levels and severity of social impairment, a key marker of pervasive developmental disorders. The SRS may be completed to provide information for children and adolescents ages 4 to 18 in both school and clinical settings. Responses on the SRS yield one SRS Total Score, which is an overall index of severity of deficits in social reciprocity. Responses also yield five "Treatment" subscale scores: "Social Awareness," "Social Cognition," "Social Communication," "Social Motivation," and "Autistic Mannerisms," which are designed to reflect areas for planning before and assessment during intervention. The SRS demonstrates adequate reliability, particularly as it pertains to the Treatment scales that were not originally conceptualized as separate constructs. The brief nature of the SRS makes it user friendly and provides quick assessment of functioning; brevity also makes it useful for large-scale studies. In addition, single scores for the various Treatment scales make the tool useful in research designed to assess improvement in specific social skills. Despite the usefulness of the SRS, there are some limitations. The same advantageous feature of brevity limits its utility and the thoroughness of the information obtained. Subsequently, it should not be used exclusively for diagnosis. In addition, although an effort was made to include both a clinical and diverse socioeconomic normative sample, care should be taking when using the measure on geographically diverse populations.
