AbstractThis summer, sports-crazy South Africa, recently named by the "New York Times" as one of the "31 Places To Go in 2010," will become the first African nation to host the FIFA World Cup. Soccer fans making the trip will be rewarded with world-class facilities, modern infrastructure, and a nation of startling contrasts and spectacular beauty. For the sport-loving tourist, there are few other destinations with South Africa's variety of activities. Factor in one of the globe's largest markets for beer and a meaty barbecue tradition known as "braai," and South Africa is a veritable paradise for the adventurous outdoors person. Soccer-silly South Africans are also keen on rugby and cricket, supporting local teams and hosting international tournaments. In their first foray into the international spotlight following the historic 1994 democratic election of Nelson Mandela, South Africa's Springboks won the 1995 Rugby World Cup, immortalized in John Carlin's book "Playing the Enemy." Although the focus here is on travel resources, librarians can help their patrons become acquainted with the country's athletic obsessions by including the following titles in their collection: Andy Tennant's "The Haynes Cricket Manual: The Official Guide to Playing the Game" (Haynes, 2009) and Mathew Brown and others' "Rugby for Dummies" (For Dummies, 2007). While Rough Guide's coverage of South Africa is especially thorough and thoughtful, the authors present titles that are essential for all collections. (ERIC).
