Abstract | In this article, the author discusses how to transform a down-on-its-luck library into an irresistible place for boys. She suggests to begin with vision, energy, and a lot of hard work. Based on the author's 30-plus years of experience working with students, she knows boys respond well to a scholarly environment. In fact, it is one of the ways librarians can encourage them to seek higher education and become lifelong learners. If librarians give boys the best and teach them how to take care of things, they respect their environment and begin to value themselves. When it comes to active young boys, noise and energy are part of the package. So why do librarians make them sit at desks six hours each day or learn from textbooks when hands-on application and movement are how they learn best? The author describes some activities and strategies that are bound to be big hits with boys. (ERIC). |
