AbstractThe author has attempted over the years to make a case for educators to work within a revolutionary critical pedagogy that examines the economic, cultural, social, and political purposes of education. Acknowledging the fact that education is a necessary but not sufficient weapon in history's arsenal of social revolution, it is clear that educators still have an important role to play in moving the society toward the imperatives of social justice. Regrettably, however, many progressive educators concerned about social justice have not sufficiently problematized capitalism itself to the extent that they are prepared to challenge the value form of labor. Why? Because that would make them socialists and not simply liberal critics of capitalism. It is the author's wager that if progressives really want to work for social justice, the first task is to create a critical pedagogy that challenges the foundations of capitalism. Some of the central aspects of such a pedagogy are discussed. (ERIC).
