Abstract | In this article, the author has equated the principal's relationship with the president of the teachers' union as a dance where each wants to lead and yet there is, as in most relationships, a mutual dependency that makes each person realize that there is a time when one leads and a time when one follows. The author presents the details of when and how each segment is skillfully accomplished and demonstrates the delicate steps school leaders should take with the teachers' union. The author also discusses the significance of a balanced relationship between the teachers' union president and school principal. Of significant importance in the balanced relationship is for each person to understand the role of the other because it is within that clarity that one can agree to disagree and do so with mutual respect. Having a clear understanding of what the role of the teachers' union president ought to be will assist a principal in understanding what he or she is trying to accomplish when the music starts.
