AbstractGreenhouses come in all shapes, sizes, and price ranges: from simple hand-built plastic-covered frames to dazzling geodesic domes. Some child care centers install greenhouses as a part of their outdoor garden space. Other centers have incorporated a greenhouse into the building itself. Greenhouses provide a great opportunity for children to grow their own food and work with plants throughout the year. Child care centers and schools with greenhouses tell great stories of growing tropical plants in the winter, starting seeds early in the spring, growing "hot house" plants in the summer, and extending the growing season into the fall. This article presents an interview with Jennifer Petersen, a preschool teacher at the Mead School--a child-centered independent school and child care in Stamford, Connecticut (serving children 6 weeks old to 8th grade) with a vibrant gardening and greenhouse curriculum. In the interview, Petersen relates the joys of children, plants, and greenhouses. (ERIC).
