Abstract	Good assessment practice is a fundamental part of good teaching and learning. It puts learners at the heart of the process, helping them to recognise achievement and make progress, and enables teachers to shape and adapt their teaching to individual needs and aspirations. Over the past year, the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) has been working with the National Strategies, consultants and advisers across eight local authorities, and 80 teachers in 40 pilot schools to develop assessing pupils' progress (APP) materials for science at Key Stage 3 (age 11-14). APP is a new, structured approach to teacher assessment that supports teachers in making periodic judgements on pupils' progress.
