Abstract | Kenya now has a 2-8-4-4 system, which means two years of preprimary (nursery, age 4-6), eight years in primary school, four in secondary, and four at university. However, at the end of the primary education course, pupils still sit for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE), a very competitive examination that determines who will proceed to high school. Many don't succeed: unlike some countries, secondary education is not yet compulsory. Science, however, is one of the papers in the KCPE, so it takes on great importance in primary schools. The author describes how Kenyan primary science has changed to reflect the needs of Kenyan society. (ERIC). |
