| Abstract | Long before a certain television show with a certain group of singing teens captured the popular imagination, Martin Ford was striking a chord with his glee clubs at Myrtilla Miner Elementary School in Washington, DC. Ford and his proteges have been spreading their music--and reaching celebrity status of their own--for more than 16 years and counting. Since 1994, when Ford first stepped in as music teacher at Miner, his young students have performed for audiences ranging from politicians to charitable organizations. They've sung for the benefit of multiple special causes and in support of their own VH1-funded keyboard lab. Earlier this year, the students added perhaps the brightest feather to their cap so far: a performance at the White House and the chance to sing a special number for First Lady Michelle Obama. Many music educators seek to raise the profile of their students and their work. This article discusses how Ford's dedication to honing his students' skills makes him a notable example of how teachers can rise to that next level. (ERIC). |
