Abstract | This article describes the creation of an intercultural welcoming panel that the authors developed with English as a second language (ESL) students and communication studies (CS) students at a community college. The creation of the welcoming panel is based on their collaborative work with both sets of students over several academic quarters. The creation of the welcoming panel is also based on two frameworks for instruction, (1) "gracious space"; and (2) "anxiety and uncertainty reduction theory." The first framework, gracious space, is defined as "a spirit and setting where the authors invite the stranger and embrace learning in public." The second framework is that of intercultural competence, specifically the theoretical concepts of uncertainty reduction, mindfulness, and promoting convergence. The authors share their reflections about class collaboration and the creation of the welcoming panel. (ERIC). |
