Abstract | How do social services professionals identify and design supportive environments that promote the positive development of LGBT youth? Although there are extraordinary examples of individuals and programs that exist for the purpose of supporting LGBT youth and fostering their development, the work of documenting and empirically analyzing what works for creating supportive environments in social services settings is only just beginning. One area from which the field of social services might learn is the safe schools movement. This article draws from the body of knowledge and practice on LGBT students and schools, and points to several key principles that could guide supportive and inclusive community programs and services.
