Abstract	Although autism spectrum disorders (ASD) to the general public might mainly be associated with social impairments, there is of course a long standing tradition--reflected in the very term "autism" from the Greek term for self "autos"--for also considering it as a disorder of self and self-understanding. With the many contributions to this special issue, there is a clear recognition of the fact that self-awareness is not an all or nothing phenomenon, that there are multiple types and that these can be selectively impaired, just as it is conceded that the various aspects of the self can be experienced. Present contributors focus on specific deficits related to the interpersonal dimension of self. Insofar as this dimension is taken to refer to a dimension of self that is constitutively dependent upon others and to a form of self-experience that is mediated through others, this is precisely where impairments are to be expected in individuals with ASD. The impairments might for instance show up in joint attention, in the management of strategic self-presentations, in the inhibition of emotional expressions, and in the possession and display of certain self-conscious emotions. But even more importantly is the idea that a fully developed reflective relationship with oneself presupposes second-person engagement, and in particular the capacity to understand and adopt the evaluative perspectives of others on oneself.
