Abstract | In this article, the author reflects on a "powerfully literate citizen" in Statement Four of the Australian Association for the Teaching of English (AATE) "Statements of Belief". He discusses the definition of "literacy" and the creation of the powerfully literate citizen. He stresses that a powerfully literate citizen operates functionally and critically, but also creatively and imaginatively. He also talks about the framing of Statement 4: in beginning with a declaration of commitment, this Statement throws a large part of its emphasis onto the role of the teacher. He contends that the teacher's role in the Statement is defined as making a central contribution to civic life in a democracy. The creation of powerfully literate citizens is aimed at those citizens achieving their aspirations but it is also aimed at their playing a key role in a civil democratic society. (ERIC). |
