AbstractIn the United States, only 2.2 percent of preschool and kindergarten teachers and 5 percent of child care workers are men. Other countries have much higher rates, but the percentage of men in U.S. early education has remained between 2 and 3 percent for the last several years. There are many reasons why so few men become early childhood educators. Most often cited are the low salaries in the field, the long history of the profession being dominated by females, and the negative stigma sometimes associated with a man working with young children. This article describes how preservice teachers in an early childhood education methods course captured the image of a male preschool teacher by observing Mr. K, a pre-K teacher who teaches 3-year-olds at Northview Early Learning Center, an early childhood program within a large urban school corporation in Michigan City, Indiana. Providing a portrait of one male teacher is just one small step in helping others understand the potential for males to work in the early childhood environment. (ERIC).
