AbstractBelonging to a personally meaningful community of learners is a powerful predictor of a student's retention and academic success. Being part of a community that is intentionally built on recognizing, valuing, and learning from the diversity within that community can further deepen students' understanding of self, others, and the global community in which they will live and work. Finding a campus community intentionally built on capitalizing on the diversity of its students can be a challenge. However, every classroom has the potential to be a multicultural community. Regardless of the subject matter or the background of the students, all the necessary ingredients are there. But making a classroom into a community that recognizes and utilizes diversity as a part of the learning process requires planning. This article presents four principles for establishing such a classroom environment. These principles include: (1) Broaden the concept of community; (2) Broaden students' understanding of diversity and multiculturalism; (3) Provide opportunities for reflection; and (4) Provide opportunities for engagement with the instructor through active learning.
