Abstract | Taking part in the United States Department of Energy's Real World Design Challenge (RWDC), the author describes how four technology education students at Cumberland Valley High School in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, took on the challenge to redesign an aircraft wing, attempting to make it more efficient than one currently in operation. The challenge was part of the national STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) initiative that, according to Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, "is designed to leverage the United States in the global market by integrating education into real world problems." The Real World Design Challenge gives the students a unique opportunity to solve real problems, take on real roles in science and engineering, and make real contributions to society. The experience of the Cumberland Valley team may well inspire other technology educators to get their students involved. (ERIC). |
