AbstractIn the past year, there was an overall decrease in dropouts at all grade levels in Maryland, with the largest decrease occurring among students in grade 12. Not surprisingly, principals across the state discovered that alternative assessment strategies that were designed to help students from special populations actually worked for all students. The Maryland State Board of Education requires all students to pass Maryland high school assessments in four content areas--algebra and data analysis, biology, English, and government--as well as meet other graduation requirements to receive the Maryland high school diploma. Maryland students can meet the graduation requirements by earning a passing score in all of the four subject areas; earn a minimum combined score; or complete its newest option: the Bridge Plan for Academic Validation. The Bridge Plan requires students to complete a project-based instructional intervention as an alternative to testing. This article discusses how the Bridge Plan allows students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills using project-based learning. (ERIC).
