AbstractResearch indicates that there is a reciprocal relationship between challenging behavior and poor academic performance and that this relationship will have a lifelong negative impact on individuals caught in this detrimental cycle. New interventions continue to be reported in the literature describing more effective ways to implement academic strategies to meet the needs of students with or at risk for an emotional and behavioral disorder (EBD). Unfortunately, much more of this attention has been focused on reading interventions rather than mathematics. There is a dearth of research related to improving mathematics skills for students with challenging behaviors. Obstacles to teaching word problem solving skills include reading ability, computational skills, and applying higher level reasoning. Beyond problem-solving skill deficits are performance deficits, where students may be unwilling to solve mathematical problems. This article presents a case example which illustrates how to improve the mathematics problem solving of a student with challenging behaviors using chaining and a token economy to teach a specific academic skill.
