Abstract | Sometimes, the inspiration for an art idea comes from the strangest and most unexpected places! The author wanted to provide students in grades 5-7 in a fine-arts module an opportunity to be creative in a unique and inexpensive way, while incorporating a three-dimensional element. Since she personally enjoys thumbing through "Architectural Digest," the author decided to share her enthusiasm for fine design and have students make their own building structures. Students were provided with an outline of basic criteria for their structures, and then given artistic freedom to create a building of their choice. In this article, the author describes an art project intended for middle-school students to (1) make 2-D and 3-D images using a variety of sources; (2) use design strategies from a variety of styles for specific purposes; and (3) solve complex design problems, while considering form and function.
