Abstract	The author reports on the dismissal of a longtime diversity administrator Dr. Cordell Black, combined with a declining minority enrollment and a deflated state budget, which has raised concerns about the University of Maryland's commitment to diversity and resulted to student protests. For years, the university has worked hard to reverse the legacy of segregation that stained its history. Attempting to right the wrongs, the institution christened a new chapter with scholarship programs, recruitment efforts and expansive diversity initiatives for under-represented minorities. However, in the last several years, the university's reluctant adoption of a domestic partner benefits program, its apathetic response to a 10-year-old request for a U.S. Latina/o studies minor, changes in recruitment efforts in favor of large numbers of international students and the hanging of a noose outside the Black student center have challenged UMD's quest to be tolerant and inclusive. Most recently, a new diversity plan caused controversy, emboldening critics and renewing skepticism about the results of a two-decade-long push to make diversity an institutional priority. The November announcement of Black's termination came less than a week after plans for a new diversity plan set off a contentious campus conversation. The document, which called for a chief diversity officer to "manage diversity" among other things, was criticized for its omissions and vague language. (ERIC).
