| Abstract | Increased enrollment of college students with disabilities raises concerns regarding appropriate communication. Faculty and administrators' lack of knowledge, false assumptions, and fear of the unknown may lead to an inequitable educational experience for students with visual disabilities. The purpose of this qualitative study was to determine the preferences in communication styles and techniques of students with visual disabilities in their interactions with others within the higher education setting. The results of 35 interviews indicated respect for others, comfort during interactions, and awareness of disability issues are key factors leading to effective communication between persons with and without visual disabilities.
