AbstractThis article discusses Clyde Warrior's campaign for a "Greater Indian America" during the 1960s. Warrior was an activist who demanded a new style of leadership and new rules for living, and was a founding member of the National Indian Youth Council (NIYC). Warrior was a leading influence upon the generation of college-educated Indians who participated in the Red Power movement of the 1960s. Warrior's many speeches and articles bristled with anger at federal imposition upon and colonial administration of Indian nations and peoples, and yet he was much more a cultural than a political activist. His primary focus was always on what could be done "for" and "by" Indians rather than "against" what was being done "to" Indians. He used his Ponca identity and cultural knowledge to draw parallels between different tribal cultures. He inspired many contemporary and future leaders of those tribal cultures to strive for self-determination through his blistering calls to arms. He used his absolute belief in the underlying strength and importance of the knowledge that tribal elders had of their traditional cultures to stress their essential necessity to the survival of all tribal communities.
