AbstractWith its global vision, community partners and cutting edge curriculum, Kirkwood Community College has become a leader in emergency preparedness and response training. The college is integrally involved with a variety of training consortia and entities including HMTRI (Hazardous Materials Training Research Institute), PETE (Partnership for Environmental Training and Education), NMFI (National Mass Fatalities Institute), MOEC (Midwest OHSA Education Center), Agro-Knowledge, and the Community Training Response Center. Kirkwood Community College is successful in emergency preparedness and response training because it brings together a host of government agencies and resources to offer in-depth, hands-on instruction to emergency management and disaster response professionals. Kirkwood currently holds grants or contracts with 10 federal and state governmental agencies to provide environmental health and safety training to hazmat teams, environmental workers, and trainers of environmental workers. Like other community colleges, Kirkwood strives to serve the technical needs of community professionals. In addition, Kirkwood Community College has expanded this traditional role to include national train-the-trainer programs and has developed educational programs to serve as models for community colleges, business and industrial training. This leadership role is exemplified in the technical and educational support for other community colleges nationwide provided through the Community College Consortium for Health and Safety Training (CCCHST). Through this consortium, Kirkwood works with member institutions to anticipate and provide instruction to meet the needs of their communities for disaster response training. (ERIC).
