Abstract | One of the best methods in the English language arts classroom is to educate students through the world of stories. The beauty of storytelling is that it often has a more powerful impact on young adults than a didactic lecture or a textbook chapter. Many times students would say that they internalize a message much more willingly through reading a book about characters going through the same situations. Teaching teens about consumerism should be no different. Discussing and writing about stories that deal with consumerism may help to make a difference. In this article, the author recommends four literature titles that address consumerism: (1) "Everything Is Not Enough" (Sandy Asher); (2) "The Gospel According to Larry" (Janet Tashjian); (3) "Feed" (M. T. Anderson); and (4) "1984" (George Orwell). (ERIC). |
