AbstractImplementing an effective crisis management program in a school district has associated costs. The most precious resource in a school system is time. Time is necessary for acquiring and practicing new skills, and for developing and implementing strategies to introduce and expand the change throughout a school or district. Implementing an effective crisis management planning and preparation program like PREPaRE is no different. Time is required for training, planning and evaluating the implementation of activities, building relationships, and developing buy-in. Other needed resources include money for training and dissemination of information to stakeholders. Prevention, vulnerability assessments, hazards mitigation, development of "go kits," and other activities also require resources. Although crisis prevention and intervention are important, most school districts have limited resources. Fortunately, there are grants available that can provide the resources needed to build the capacity of a district (or a consortium of districts) to implement comprehensive and sustainable crisis prevention and intervention plans based on the PREPaRE training curriculum. This article will focus on a grant opportunity that is most appropriate for funding crisis prevention and intervention; however, the strategic approach to grant writing is appropriate for most grants.
