Abstract | Scientific literacy goals feature strongly in the rhetoric of most forward-looking science curricula. Many science educators believe that a key means of attaining these goals is through the engagement of students in "authentic scientific inquiry". For students to experience such learning it is critical that teachers understand and appreciate what authentic scientific inquiry involves. In this paper I explore classroom teachers' understanding of authentic scientific inquiry and compare their views with the research literature on the same topic. The teachers' responses reveal a range of views and a genuine interest in learning how to enhance their pedagogical content knowledge in this area. (Contains 1 figure.) (As Provided). |
