AbstractRunaway behavior is a national epidemic that affects many school-aged youths. Although there are no definitive numbers, it has been estimated that between 1.3 and 2.8 million youths run away each year, and youths with disabilities are more at risk for engaging in runaway behavior than their nondisabled peers. Considering the high number of youths who run away and the negative educational factors these youths often experience, this is an issue of which all school personnel should be aware, especially those who serve youths with disabilities. In addition, the presence of a disability and negative school experiences are good predictors of youths at risk for runaway behavior. This article presents some common characteristics of youths at risk for runaway behavior that educators should look for to help them identify youths at risk for engaging in runaway behavior. Two coping strategies that educators can teach youths as proactive measures to possibly prevent runaway behavior are discussed. (Contains 3 tables.) (ERIC).
