Abstract | When the author read "The Dark Hills Divide" by Patrick Carman (2005), a fantasy story that takes place in the mythical Land of Elyon, where animals can talk and the people live in a walled city to protect themselves from the evil outside world, she was bothered by a poem used by Carman that had not been referenced in the book. In a web search, it turned out that the same poem was credited to John Godfrey Saxe (1816-1887), based on a legend from India (Saxe 1878, Yen and Hunt 2008). When the author finally got her chance to ask Patrick Carman about his omission of a citation for "The Blind Men and the Elephant," she learned that Carman was an inexperienced writer who, in his biography page on Scholastic's website, admits that he is a self-taught writer.
