AbstractI. Hakki Tonguc was undoubtedly one of the most gifted educational thinkers of his generation. As the architect of a short-lived but highly innovative experiment in the early 20th century Turkey, Village Institutes (Koy Enstituleri), he certainly made an important contribution to educational theory and practice. On the other hand, despite his theoretical and practical innovations in the field of education, Tonguc still waits for well-deserved and long overdue international recognition. This article aims to introduce the reader to Tonguc. The first section of the article is about the idea of utopia and the need for an "educational utopia." I discuss utopia as an emancipatory practice and claim that it is impossible to make political demands on education without creating an "educational utopia." In the second part, I, present a biography of Tonguc and move into a general discussion about Tonguc's utopia of individual and society. The last part is to focus particularly on his utopia of education. In the article, I focus on Tonguc's radical critiques of traditional school directed at the unequal and alienating practices of schooling, and I draw attention to the similarity between his critiques and the tradition of liberatory pedagogy. (Contains 18 endnotes.) (As Provided).
