AbstractHow do teachers in other countries respond to award-winning American picture books? Do themes and characters, even the purpose of stories for children, differ from culture to culture? What can U.S. educators learn about their own values when working with educators from another country? The author found intriguing answers to these questions during a semester as a Fulbright Lecturer at the South Ukrainian Pedagogical University in Odessa in the fall of 2005. In this article, the author shares her experiences in teaching two courses in the university's Department of Preschool Education. One was for third-year undergraduates who were preparing to be teachers. The other, Early Literacy: A Developmental Approach to Teaching Reading and Writing to Young Children, was for teachers in child care centers who were returning to the university for a month of intensive training either to renew or to upgrade their certificates. Through her experience as a Fulbright Lecturer, the author has begun to understand why American children's picture books could be viewed so differently in Ukraine and learned about the realities of Ukrainian preschool education as well as about herself as an educator and American citizen. The experience allowed the author to be more sensitive about her own assumptions and biases as a classroom teacher and to consider how much they influence her own work, whether she is planning literacy instruction, conferring with families, or choosing a picture book for story time.
