Abstract | This article discusses the 4-H Gateway Academies specifically designed to enhance science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) skills and knowledge in middle school youth. The innovative summer day camps partnered Project Lead the Way--trained teachers with county 4-H staff from University of Wisconsin-Extension (UW-Extension) Cooperative Extension to present nine week-long 4-H Gateway Academies. The academies were funded through a grant to UW-Extension from the Kern Family Foundation and used curriculum developed by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. 4-H Youth Development staff provided team building activities and logistical support. Campers worked together and used current technology on activities related to robotics, aeronautics, and computer design. (Contains 1 table.) (ERIC). |
