AbstractThe School-Based Mental Health Program's goals are to identify at-risk children, reduce ineffective functioning of at-risk children, provide social service interventions, increase effective parenting skills, help families access community resources, and support mental health education. The program was designed to develop a comprehensive, systematic, and empirically validated prevention assessment and early intervention services to at-risk elementary school aged children and families within two public school systems. Overall comparisons between the experimental and control schools were conducted, as well as comparisons between at-risk children at the experimental schools who received services and at-risk children at the control schools who did not receive services. Results indicate that the majority of the goals of the School-Based Mental Health Program (SBMHP) (i.e., identify at-risk children, reduce ineffective functioning of at-risk children, provide social service interventions, and support mental health education) have been effective. Further, improvements were noted in the provision of individual social service interventions and Primary Mental Health Care Project (PMHP) services to at-risk children. The purpose of this article is to present evaluation results after 3 years of comprehensive interventions, to identify effective and ineffective treatment components, and to make recommendations regarding the future provision of services that would lead to eventual self-sustainability of SBMHP.
