Abstract | As the world increasingly comes to terms with the reality of global warming, international negotiators are struggling to work out the terms of a new climate change framework to be finalized this December in Copenhagen, Denmark. One aspect being discussed is a plan to compensate developing countries for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by protecting their tropical forests. Such a plan could go a long way towards saving the world's fast disappearing forests. This background essay and accompanying handout can help students learn more about the links between tropical forests and climate change, and ways global citizens can have an impact. (Contains 8 online resources and 16 notes.) (As Provided). |
