AbstractIn this article, the author describes the 11th Dance and the Child International (daCi) Conference 2009 which was hosted by the Edna Manley School of the Visual and Performing Arts in Kingston, Jamaica from August 2-8. Nicholeen Degrasse-Johnson, the director of the Edna Manley School of Dance along with daCi officials, including the president of daCi Ann Kipling Brown, were responsible for making this first-time conference on the island of Jamaica the success that it was. The opening programme featured performers as well as speakers, and most of them put everyone on notice as to what a special week was in store for everyone. The Master of Ceremonies (MC), or facilitator, was Amina Blackwood Meek, a storyteller of renown and gifted with a deep lyrical voice that reached the capacity filled crowd. The programme opened with a selection of dances from the juniors of the Edna Manley School of Dance. More than 500 delegates from 22 countries attended the 11th daCi Conference. For first attendees and sixth attendees alike, it was an incredible experience to be in the land of dance, music and history. Everyone learned something about someone else's culture including the many Jamaican dance students who were present at many of the workshops, masterclasses and performances. It gave the Jamaicans an opportunity to see themselves in a global perspective and it gave many of the foreigners an opportunity to see the diversity of Jamaican dance and the centrality of its presence in Jamaican life.
