Abstract | Getting and keeping the attention of an eight-grade algebra class can often be a challenge. Doing so while trying to meet curriculum expectations and standards can be a daunting task unless projects are designed to both pique and maintain student curiosity. Projects designed around standards that initiate interest and have multiple entry points for students of different ability levels are a teacher's best tool for building understanding. This article describes a project that allows students to become engaged right from the start as they take a hands-on approach exploring linear relationships, parabolic curves, and quadratic functions. Although there can be considerable preparation in time, it is worth the effort and can be used year after year with little additional preparation time. Once the teacher briefly introduces the operation and use of the manipulatives, students can take the lead in working through the project and building understanding.
