Abstract	In this article, the author assumes that choreographers sometimes choose to present their dancers undressed because they believe it contributes to the meanings of the dance as a work of art. It is this idea that nudity can be artistically meaningful that the author wishes to explore. The author begins by defining "art dance" in relation to other kinds of dance practices and then considers a distinction between nudity and nakedness raised first by Kenneth Clark and John Berger in their analyses of meaning in oil paintings and other visual representations of the human form. The author analyzes the feeling and form to provide a pedagogical framework for dialogue with students about the role of nudity in the aesthetics of art dance. The author also presents examples that serve as illustrations of how one might interpret meanings in particular dance works that use nudity. (Contains 4 photos and 33 notes.) (ERIC).
