AbstractThe library, as we once knew it, may no longer be relevant. And, yet, this is undoubtedly the most exciting time in history to be a librarian. The future of the school library as a relevant and viable institution is largely dependent on librarians and how quickly they respond to change. They worry about their field and their practice. They worry that as a profession they aren't shifting fast enough to seize new opportunities to create valuable, dynamic programs. In this article, the authors discuss in detail the issues that keep librarians at night. These issues are: (1) Economic shifts; (2) Intellectual property shifts; (3) The challenge of keeping ahead; (4) Failing to embrace networked media; (5) Advocacy by nonlibrarians; (6) Their national expectations that ignore critical learning skills; (7) Missing the potential of reading 2.0; (8) Realizing that Internet access is an intellectual freedom issue; (9) Recognizing that modern practice is directly connected to equity; (10) Librarians are bigger than databases; (11) Defining the brand; (12) Planning for one-to-one computing or ubiquitous computing; (13) Becoming an online presence; and (14) Seeing obstacles rather than opportunities.
