AbstractFounded in 1821, Widener University is a two-state (Pennsylvania and Delaware), four-campus, eight-college private institution serving approximately 6,700 students. Following arrival of the new senior vice president and provost in 2004 and subsequent reorganization of vice presidential responsibilities, Student Affairs is now led by a dean of students who reports to the senior vice president and provost. Historically, co-curricular programming and other aspects of Student Affairs have been a bit marginalized by a large segment of the campus population, which may have been operating on a "need to know" basis in regard to student life issues. As a result, it is likely that student affairs and its work were either invisible to the community when things were running well or, alternatively, viewed as "in crisis" when things were running poorly. As a result of recent restructuring, however, the potential for Student Affairs to enjoy more daily recognition is substantial, allowing it to move into the mainstream of the university's vision for promoting student development and learning. This movement and potential are readily evidenced by its staff's inclusion in strategic planning, and more recently as members on the two key committees (design and then implementation) involved with assessment of student learning. This chapter provides a glimpse of student affairs assessment at Widener University including a specific example of assessment, tips to implementing assessment at an institution, and barriers encountered when implementing the process at Widener University.
