AbstractCalifornia State University, Sacramento, commonly referred to as "Sacramento State," is a booming metropolitan university located on 300 acres in the state capital of California. The university, the seventh largest in the California State University system, enrolls a multicultural student body of approximately 29,000 students. At Sacramento State, student success ultimately relates to retention and graduation rates. However, as research shows, the chances for these outcomes are increased as students: (1) Become more connected to other students, faculty, and staff--often via the programs and activities offered by Student Affairs; (2) Experience a sense of belonging or a feeling of being a part of the campus, again enhanced by many Student Affairs activities; and (3) Access myriad academic and support programs that potentially increase their performance in the classroom. Cognizant of these student success predictors, staff within Sacramento State's Division of Student Affairs actively promote their programs in order to positively contribute to student success. Meanwhile, new faculty are made aware of Student Affairs programs during the faculty orientation program offered every August. Continuing faculty receive updates on these programs during the regularly scheduled college and department meetings held throughout the year. The more well-informed faculty are, the more they refer their students to appropriate events, programs, services, and activities sponsored by the division. This chapter provides a glimpse of student affairs assessment at California State University, Sacramento, including a specific example of assessment, tips to implementing assessment at an institution, and barriers encountered when implementing the process at California State University, Sacramento.
