AbstractA close look at the principals who make up the MetLife-NASSP Breakthrough Schools (BTS) Class of 2009 reveals a lot about desirable leadership traits. Each of the five middle level schools and the five high schools has achieved remarkable results while serving large numbers of economically challenged students. Behind each school's successes is a thoughtful and determined leader. It takes a principal with a deep understanding of his or her school's culture and climate and knowledge about the change process to be successful in setting new directions. The BTS principals are skilled at developing individuals' potential and designing their schools to provide instruction that results in improved student achievement. When the BTS principals were asked, What characteristics do you possess that have made you an effective instructional leader? they described dozens of personal attributes. From those, a consistent pattern of six traits emerged: (1) Holding high expectations and goals for all students and staff members; (2) Seeking input from all stakeholders; (3) Encouraging the growth and professional development of staff members; (4) Engaging in lifelong learning; (5) Being visionary; and (6) Valuing collaboration.
