Abstract | One may have heard of reality TV, but what about reality learning? The latter is probably a term one hasn't seen much, although it is in many ways a clearer and more concise name for a concept that in 2006 marks its 100th anniversary: cooperative education, or "co-op." Co-op, a break-through idea pioneered at the University of Cincinnati by Herman Schneider in 1906, broadens higher education classroom learning with on-the-job experience. Throughout its first century, co-op and its associated principles have taken on myriad other names. With a plethora of titles, is it any wonder that there has been lively debate about just how to define co-op? The National Commission for Cooperative Education has brought about some consensus, however. Still, co-op continues to be misunderstood or sometimes unknown. This article talks about co-op and describes its tremendous benefits not just for students, but also for academic institutions and employers. (ERIC). |
