AbstractThe purpose of this chapter is to offer frameworks and considerations for student affairs professionals seeking to serve the transition needs of the current generation of student veterans. The historical intersections of the military and higher education, particularly with respect to the effects of the draft on students and higher education, training students for wartime purposes, and providing educational benefits to student veterans, are discussed. As the United States continues to rely on National Guard and reserve forces, enrolled students' concurrent military service has become a more common experience, and postsecondary educational benefits present an attractive incentive for military enlistment. At the same time, contemporary administrators and faculty members are less likely than earlier generations to have personally experienced military or wartime service. Consequently, campus personnel should initiate partnerships with veterans organizations and local military representatives in order to design and offer transitional services. Moreover, offering educational programs can build awareness of soldiers' experiences and assist campus administrators in being proactive in serving student veterans. (ERIC).
