| Abstract | Community colleges have a long and impressive history of preparing a well-qualified technical workforce to meet the immediate and short-term needs of local and regional industries. Programs range from certificates in areas such as drafting, computer-aided design, and automotive technology to associate degrees in electrical and mechanical technologies, manufacturing, and chemical and process technologies, to name just a few. This article looks to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and makes some general assumptions about what constitutes engineering-related technology occupations. The author discusses the challenges and opportunities for students and colleges in this occupational area. Practical suggestions on how colleges can respond are offered. (Contains 1 table.) (ERIC). |
