Abstract | What motivates more than 800 people from 101 countries around the world to meet at a World Environmental Education Congress (WEEC)? And how does one make the most of such an incredible gathering of people, cultures, thoughts and minds? What did people learn and was it worthwhile? These are just some of the questions that have been chasing through the author's mind in the weeks following the fourth World Environmental Education Congress held in Durban, South Africa, in July 2007. The theme of the 2007 WEEC was "Learning in a Changing World," inspired by the knowledge that one of the most constant features of life today is change. The final Congress programme presented more than 400 contributions, some theoretical and speculative, others practical and empirical. All, however, were imbued with the values of seeking greater clarity on the global project of strengthening environmental education for a more equitable, just and sustainable society. This article shares some preliminary reflections on the 2007 WEEC event, noting that in-depth analyses will only become possible as time passes. (Contains 1 table.) (ERIC). |
