Abstract | The face of teacher education is rapidly changing. Teacher shortages, legislative changes, and adult career changers have prompted colleges and universities across the nation to develop new programs or redesign existing programs for teacher preparation. For universities, the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program has emerged as the panacea for alternative certification demands. MAT programs look vastly different from one institution to another. Smaller institutions are faced with additional challenges because they often lack human and financial resources to develop new programs. The purpose of this article is to outline how one liberal arts institution utilized its Master of Arts in Teaching program to provide avenues for alternative certification candidates and to discuss the benefits and challenges of this program.
