AbstractSouthern California serves as the location for the incidents described in this article. An up-and-coming midsize "Christian" university, noted for its yearly rise in the "U.S. News: America's Best Colleges" to the top twenty-five universities of its size, locates and contextualizes these experiences along the author's journey. The author's encounters reflect transitions from being an undergraduate student, to a graduate student, to part-time faculty, and eventually, to a full-time assistant professor of English. The author addresses all these phases since they all transpired at the same institution; though he briefly includes his student status, the bulk of his experiences occur while being a teacher. The author offers experiences to empathize and prepare others for what may happen to them. Injustice, based on race or not, is never pleasant, but when individuals are victims of injustice simply based on their ethnicity they need strength to live beyond the pain. The author finds much of mainstream America very distant from Native American reality, and the author welcomes opportunities to correctly inform students and colleagues about misperceptions, in some cases a lack of perception, about Native Americans.
