AbstractThe general goal of research into LGBT issues among youth is, of course, to improve the situation of young people. Research on its own cannot attain such an objective; it is a tool in a chain of interventions. Implementation of the recommendations of research is essential for effective use of research. But, implementation is often difficult. To secure the transfer from research to implementation, researchers need to think about how this information is going to be used and by whom before starting their research. This is not as simple as it sounds. In the day-to-day reality there is often a gap between the interests and contexts of academic researchers vis-a-vis activists and caretakers of LGB youth. For proper implementation, a good collaboration is necessary. Since all these people are potential stakeholders in the innovations which are needed, they have to be involved at the earliest moment possible and an ongoing collaboration has to be integral to the research project. Two examples of bad practices of Dutch research and, therefore, failed impact are illustrative. The first example concerns a case were researchers did not collaborate enough with activists; the second illustration is where activists did not collaborate enough with researchers. Research can be done in many ways, but its usefulness and effectiveness on social realities have to taken into account. Certainly, attention to the proper implementation of research results is crucial. However, the present approach in Dutch school pilot projects offers promising views on a much more direct link between research and implementation. (ERIC).
