AbstractWhen it comes to adolescent sexuality, researchers have focused on topics such as sexuality education, contraceptive methods, the use of condoms, and first intercourse. These studies have provided valuable information on issues that need attention from authorities and that are widely recognized as social problems (unwanted pregnancies, for example). However, other topics have been left aside or have not been given enough attention. This is the case of sexual orientation, especially in Latin American countries like Mexico, where homosexuality, bisexuality, and transgenderism are controversial subjects. As a result of this situation, individuals have scarce information on many matters related to sexual identity and sexual orientation in young people. In the author's experience, part of the cause for this inattention is that sexual orientation often has been considered an adult issue. D'Augelli and Grossman's long term study has effectively combined previous recommendations and notes from other authors with their personal experience as researchers to create a methodology that will show forceful results, likely to be generalized to other populations, not only in the United States, but in other countries as well. In the case of Mexico, research is likely to start growing by addressing first "basic" issues about the lives and experiences LGB youth: sexual orientation discovery, coming out, romantic relationships, social development, sexual practices. Gradually, more precise lines of investigation can be developed, and results from different studies should be compared to those from other countries or longitudinally. (ERIC).
