AbstractAdult educators are well aware of the need to understand the communities they serve. This is important, not only to improve teaching, but also to make programs more accessible. The Adult Learning Research Project (Goto, Martin, Goulet, Robinson, and Furtado, in press) was designed to gather preliminary information about communities that are underserved by adult education in Whatcom County, Washington. General Educational Development (GED) students were asked to describe the needs and perspectives of community members who desire more education but do not return to school. The central purpose of this work was to determine why eligible adults do not seek further education and to devise ways of helping them achieve their goals. Drawing on findings from this study, program coordinators at Bellingham Technical College and Skagit Valley College implemented new outreach strategies that targeted local communities. This article describes these strategies and draws broader conclusions about reaching underserved populations. (ERIC).
