Abstract | Children are naturally interested in shapes and spatial ideas. Geometric learning builds on their inquisitiveness and enthusiasm and challenges them to explore ideas about shape: their characteristics, spatial relationships, and symmetry. As such, early childhood environments should provide opportunities for children to explore materials, engage in activities, and work in collaboration with peers and teachers to construct their own knowledge of the world around them. Teachers can organize the environment to encourage students to explore shapes and their characteristics by providing pictures of various typical and atypical shapes in different sizes and orientations throughout the classroom. Quality instruction occurs in environments that feature these three characteristics: (1) Use of rich geometric language; (2) Support of children's thinking; and (3) Nurture of children's explorations and ideas. Examples of materials that foster geometric learning and development in the early childhood classroom are also discussed in this article. (ERIC). |
